Laos

Welcome to Laos

At the crossroads of Southeast Asia, Laos, possibly the least well-known nation in the region, is present. China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma) surround this small "land in between," providing the Lao rulers with opportunities for territorial expansion during pre-modern times. But more often than not, Laos has served as a conduit between these strong neighbors and a scene of their and their allies' meddling.

Grant Evans beautifully brings Lao history into light in this passage. Evans follows the dramatic history of the creation of Laos as a modern nation from ancient antiquity, when the dynastic governments of the area rose and waned, to the 20th century and the tumult of independence from France, the Vietnam War, and its aftermath.

Travelers, merchants, diplomats, and students will find A Short History of Laos to be an excellent introduction to the country. For those who are familiar with Lao history, Evans looks at significant moments in new ways and seriously refutes popular notions about the fascinating history of Laos.
